Two thousand and fourteen

There are hundreds of ways to sum up your year.
No words can sum up mine.
So these photos will try to say more than thousand words.

Minion beanie!

 photo UntitledInfographic_zpsf47e1a14.jpeg

Merry Christmas to everyone!
I know I'm bit late in my wishes, but it is only because I have been having such merry Christmas myself. Eating, sleeping and reading have been my priorities in past two days. Refreshing change for me. Also it seemed that our modem thought the same and shut down for almost two days.

Anyways. I was thinking about continuing with the travel posts later on, in the spring, when traveling is more current to many people! So here we go with other topic I love, such as crafts! This year I felt like really putting effort on my Christmas presents, as I haven't had a lot of time to put myself into them during my last three IB years. I wanted to give everyone something that would fit them. Most things I had to make myself to really fit them to the recipient.

This minion beanie is one example of those gifts. This one I did to my father, who shares my love  and probably is the reason for my love towards animated films. Minion humor is the best. Doing this beanie was so much fun.

Bottom, hihihihi.

Tää Minion (kätyri, Itse Ilkimys-elokuvasta) on hyvä esimerkki niistä lahjoista, joita aloin itse väsäämään. Minion-huumori on vaan parasta. Ja tän pipon tekeminen hauskaa!

Interrail: Firenze (Florence) in daylight

 photo IMG_9427_zps6ecc910f.jpg

Ever since my mother traveled to Firenze (I simply refuse to call it Florence) I have always wanted to visit the art capitol of the world. Unlike many other cities, Firenze stole my heart very quickly. Our hotel staff was amazing. Receptionist marked to our map all the best places to go and even told us when to see them. After that she walked us to our room and through the kitchen. Without her, the stay in the hotel would have not been much.

Siitä lähtien kun äiti kävi joskus vuosia sitten Firenzessä oon aina halunnut päästä maailman taidepääkaupunkiin. Toisin kuin moni muu kaupunki, Firenze varasti mun sydämen todella nopeasti. Meijän hotellin henkilökunta oli aivan mahtavaa. Respan tyttö kertoi meille kaikki parhaat paikat, nähtävyydet ja jopa koska niitä kannatti käydä katsomassa. Sen jälkeen saatiin kierros hotellin ympäri. Ilman tätä ihanuutta hotelli olisi ollut aika mitäänsanomaton.

 photo edited_zps1173f67c.jpg

Anyway. She told us to visit place called Marcato Centrale less than 100 meters from our hotel. It was definitely worth seeing, even though we didn't know how to shop anything from there since we only had a microwave to use. On our way to anything we always two Cathedrals, Lorenzo and the Duomo. Every town and city in Italy seems to have a Duomo, but Firenze's Duomo was something different. Made from variety of colors of marble, it was one of the most beautiful Cathedrals I have ever seen. And I do not tend to give credit to churches, since they all seem so similar in their flashiness and bigness. Duomo was not the only building I marveled in Firenze. Ponte Vecchio also stole my heart.

Jokatapauksessa.

 photo edited-001_zps968f77c8.jpg

The reason why I loved Firenze, was not only the marvelous buildings, but also the streets. Especially how little cars there was. And how many leather shops and stands they had. It seemed like anywhere you looked there was always a sign saying "Leather".

 photo IMG_9591_zpsef7de9ff.jpg

Art. So much art. There was no way I could have seen even a 10th of it. The city breaths and is art itself. Lines to everywhere were humongous and it took several hours to get into Uffizi. But it was definitely worth the wait. Not only for the art, but also for the views the museum had. Galleria dell' Academia was very religious, but in ways I had not seen before. I also loved how easy the museums in Italy were to follow. Basically there was always only one way to go through them, which made it easier not to miss anything special. Very much unlike Versailles museum and Louvre.

Interrail: Pisa, Rimini and San Marino

The adventure from Riomaggiore did not continue without problems. As a little town, it seemed that the place had its own rules. Our favorite place said to be opened from 8 a.m. and we decided to eat some breakfast in it. With our backpacks ready and noses headed towards leaving we realized the place was not open. Wonderful. Nothing to eat and train leaving in an hour. Grabbed something from the store and went back to the hotel room to eat it. As usual we arrived to the train station well in advance, this time only to realize that our train was 20 minutes late. Second wonderful of the morning. In the end our train was almost 1,5 hours late and we had crappy breakfast.

Arriving to Pisa was like arriving to ghost city. The train station was closed, sun was shining in its full power and all we could see was dead grass and sand. Thanks to the modern technology we quickly googled our route to the Square of Miracles, which was quite literally on our way was we were planning on changing trains in Pisa and in the process also change train stations. Square was located right in between them.

Seikkailu Riomaggioresta eteenpäin ei sujunut ihan ongelmitta. Pienenä kaupunkina Riomaggiorella näytti olevan ihan omat sääntönsä. Meidän lemppariruokapaikka nimittäin sanoi aukeavansa kahdeksalta, jonka takia päätimme suunnata sinne aamupalalle. Rinkat valmiina ja nenien menosuunnat kohti junaa, tajuttiin kuitenkin ettei aamupalapaikka ollutkaan auki. Ihanaa.

 photo 201409_zps3381fd32.jpg

We came, saw the Leaning Tower, sweated like little pigs, ate the cheapest 3 course meal of our trip and left. Pisa was very Italian. And the train was late of course. We arrived to Rimini in early evening and as usual walked to our hostel, called the Jammin' Rimini Party Hostel near the beach.

Rimini wasn't on our original plan. We actually realized on our way to Italy that we would be spending a lot of time in some places which could be hard on our wallets. At the same time I realized that our friends were coming to Italy. Rimini to be exact. As we did have some spare days to use, we decided it would be awesome to spend them with them. So we headed half-spontaneously to Rimini, which we knew nothing about.

My lovelies Jontte and Ina.
Rimini itself uncovered to be pretty boring for a tourist not fond on sunbathing. And especially boring on low-season such as August. With the friends we made at our hostel and our Finnish friends we headed to the only club open that weekend, Carnaby. Okay at off-season and with great friends. Next day greeted me too hot, too hung-over and too tired. However, luck was on our side as the most coolest thing ever was happening in Rimini that weekend. Gelato World Tour.

Rimini itsessään osottautui melko tylsäksi, varsinkin meille auringonpalvontaa välttäville. Erityisen tylsän mestasta teki myös matalasesonkiaika. Uusien hostellissa tavattujen tyyppien ja kavereitten kanssa lähettiin kuitenkin kaupungin ainoalle aukiolevalle klubille, Carnabylle. Ja seuraava päivä sitten tervehtikin mua sitten aivan liian kuumana, krapulaisena ja väsyneenä. Onni oli kuitenkin meidän puolella meinaa samaisena viikonloppuna kaupunkiin oli saapunut Gelato World Tour!

 photo 20140906-08_zps92e6b2ff.jpg

This meant that we got to taste and taste and taste some of the world's best Gelatos for only 7 euros per person. And oh we did. To the point of feeling sick. I was especially amazed with the different tastes that you can actually put in Gelato. It was definitely not the ordinary strawberries and chocolate, but it was Madagascan chocolate, pistachios, roses, lime, basil, orange... Then we voted our favorites. My favorite actually won, Cow and the Moon's gelato stole my heard and made me wish for trip to Sydney.

Mun lemppari itseasiassa voitti, Cow and the Moon, sai mut haikailemaan yhä enemmän matkaa Ausseihin.

Next day, in little bit better condition, we decided to accompany our friends to San Marino. Also not in our original plan but strongly recommended by many. And I'm glad we did, the city/country was very pretty and we can say that we traveled through seven countries.

DIY: Candy infused vodka

 photo IMG_0729_zps614d37b2.jpg

Postaus on kokonaan englanniksi

About a two weeks ago I had one of my best friend's housewarming party. As if she would have not been living in this town for several months already. Anyways, I wanted to do something special as a housewarming gift. Roosa, however, is a very prepared person and hence would have not needed household appliances (as many other young people moving away from home). So when I saw this DIY in A Beautiful Mess -blog, few weeks back, I was reminded that I had heard about this before too. One of the best shots I have actually ever drank was a Skittles-shot we made with a group of friends.

So infused vodka it was. It took me some time to decide which flavors I would do, and some not so successful test runs. In the end I just walked in to a candy store and picked up two candies that I thought would be good for infusing, hard peppermint candies and pineapple jellybeans, and hoped for the best.

 photo edited_zps524c87de.jpg

All I needed was the following:

1 handful of peppermint candies
1 handful of pineapple jellybeans
2 little bottles (I used recycled mini smoothie bottles of 250ml)
2 bottles for mixing (don't have to be pretty)
4 labeling stickers
0,5 liters of vodka

 photo IMG_0752_zpsbbfe1046.jpg
 photo IMG_0760_zps0313c090.jpg

Infusing was super simple!
I simply just put handful of candy on the bottom of the bottle and pored vodka on top of them. After this I let them sit a while (shaking them every now and then) and over night.

 photo edited1_zps732bea5a.jpg

Peppermint-vodka was way simpler than pineapple one, since all of the candy infused to the vodka overnight. Jellybeans, however, left somewhat gross slimy beans behind. But that was easy to fix. Simply by putting the mix through coffee filter paper the problem was solved. The only thing that was compromised a bit was the color, which lost bit of its brightness, but very little.

The taste in both was great, but our favorite was Peppermint. Not only is it superduper cute in color, it also tasted exactly like the candy. Better than any other mint vodka I have had. It blended great with chocolate milk too, and I think would make the perfect drink for winter with hot chocolate.

Interrail: Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre

Right after Bern we rushed to Italy. With the wrong train though. That is why we missed Stresa. From here on we would spend 3 whole weeks in Italy.
We had been asking about the best places to visit in Italy from H's godmother, who happens to be a tour-guide in Northern Italy. This is why we just passed through Milan. City full of amazing fashion and noise. I left my drool on Michael Kors' window. I wasn't inspired to take pictures though. The city and the shopping street was that boring to me.

Bernin jälkeen rymistettiin sitten Italiaan. Väärällä junalla tosin. Siksi jäi Stresa näkemättä. Kolme viikkoa tästä eteenpäin tulisimme olemaan Italiassa.
Oltiin siis jo kyselty H:n kummitädiltä parhaita mestoja Pohjois-Italiassa isojen kaupunkien lisäksi. Turistioppaan neuvoja meinaa oltiin valmiita jopa toteuttamaan. Siksi suuntasimmekin vain hetkeksi Milanoon. Kaupunki oli meluisa ja täynnä upeaa muotia. Jätin kuolani muun muassa Michael Korsin ikkunaan.

 photo IMG_9269_zpsdf7f0f2c.jpg

From Milan we continued to Cinque Terre, like the godmother suggested. Cinque Terre in short is a group of five little villages in Ligurian Coast and one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can only access the villages as a tourist by train. From the five villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, we choose the last one by chance because I found an amazing little hotel in it.

Milanosta kuitenkin jatkoimme kummitädin ohjeiden mukaisesti Cinque Terreen. Cinque Terre on siis viiden kylän kokoonpano Ligurian rannikolla ja UNESCOn maailmanperintökohde, eikä suotta. Kyliin itsessään pääsee turistina vain junalla. Kylistä Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola ja Riomaggiore valitsimme summamutikassa Riomaggioren kun sattumalta sieltä löysin suloisen ja ihanan ylellisen pikku hotellin.

The whole Cinque Terre area was breathtakingly beautiful. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Italy and actually texted my mom that I found her retirement place (option before has been Key West). Villages however are super small and do not take a lot of time to get to know. We spend 2 nights in Riomaggione and roamed around for 2 days, which was quite enough.

 photo IMG_9245_zpsd59b8baa.jpg
 photo 20140904-06_zps1143fc79.jpg

We got to see almost everything in 2 days. Most of the time we just spend relaxing and eating. We also checked out the beach, although neither of us is really beachfriendly. For my misfortune my blistered fett did not like the rocky bottom of the beach, although I usually love a nice clean rocky beach. Other than that, we mostly just ate.
Our favorite, Bar Centrale was located right in the middle of the only road going through the village. It also proved to be an amazing place to go to when bored. The guidebook our lovely hotel staff loaned us was able to tell us that Bar Centrale would serve the best mojitos in town. We however had to conclude that the 50-50 mix ratio was not really for our taste.

In Riomaggiore, you really felt the relaxedness in your bones. No hurry to anywhere. On our first night we decided to buy a pizza and go enjoy the sunset on the beach. We got the pizza for under 10 euros, and it was said to serve 8 people, so we got a nice evening meal, night snack and breakfast out of it. Happy traveling wallet.

Riomaggioressa ei todellakaan ollut kiire minnekään. Sain kirjanikin luettua loppuun.
